STP Devotional for the Week of 10/07/24
There are 3 types of lords. First is little “l” lord which is someone with authority, control, or power over others. This refers to someone who is a master or a ruler of some kind. In Jesus’ day, it was used as a title of respect toward earthly authorities.
The second is LORD with all caps which means Yahweh. This refers to God as the supreme or ultimate reality, perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness.
The last one is today’s name of Jesus. Lord with a capital “L.” This is much more than a title or a sign of respect or honor. “Jesus is Lord” proclaims the deity of Jesus. “Jesus is Lord” means “Jesus is God.” Let’s go through some of the verses that proclaim this truth. First, Jesus himself knew it:
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Matthew 28:18
The angels and all of heaven know that He is, in fact, the Lord of lords.
They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.” Revelation 17:14
Peter revealed this truth when Jesus was speaking with Moses and Elijah, and God confirmed it:
And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” Matthew 17:4-5
Later, during the Last Supper, John used this name for Jesus when inquiring who would betray Him.
So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” John 13:25
When Jesus visited the disciples after His resurrection, John again said,
. . . to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. John 21:7
Our faith is based on the truth that Jesus is Lord.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
Jesus is Lord. It’s the truth, whether people acknowledge the fact or not. He is more than the Messiah, more than the Savior; He is the Lord of all. Someday, all will submit to that truth.
Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9–11
When we accept Christ, we’re not only accepting Him as our Savior, but as our Lord which makes Him the ruler of our lives. He holds the plan, not us.
